Homework and Assignments in Online Classes

One of the questions we hear the most is: How do I turn in homework / assignments / tests in my online class?

The exact and accepted method is at the discretion of your instructor. He/she should outline that in either the syllabus or in the assignment description itself. If it is not clear, your job is to ask!

Given that, there are a number of 'typical' ways an instructor will ask you to turn in homework or an assignment.

Blackboard - Assignments - In Blackboard there is an Assignment Tool where you can answer a question directly and/or upload a file to submit to your instructor.

Blackboard - Discussion - Some homework or projects are to be shared among your classmates. Therefore, you will need to answer a question, participate in a discussion or submit assignments for your classmates to critique in a Discussion board.

Blackboard - Email - There is a separate Email tool within Blackboard where your instructor may require you to submit your assignment there. You can, again, answer a question and/or attach documents to send to your instructor within the Email system.

External Web Site - Some instructors use their own or a publisher's web site in support of the class. Some assignments are to be completed at the external (i.e. not Genesee) web site and the instructor will collect the assignment from that site.

Outlook Email - You may be asked to use your Genesee email to send assignments to the instructor's Genesee email.

USPS Mail - Some instructors will accept US Postal Service mail (snail mail) as an acceptable way to send in assignments. Before you send anything be very sure of the address the instructor wants you to use. If you're not sure where to send it, ask, do not assume that sending the material to the Batavia Campus is acceptable.

Fax - Some instructors will accept faxed material for the assignments. Again, before you send anything, be very sure of the fax number that the instructor wants you to use. If you're not sure where to send it, ask, do not assume that sending the material to the Batavia Campus is acceptable.

The bottom line is: when in doubt, ask!
